Bison - National Mammal Commemorative Coin
On May 9, 2016, the President signed a law making the American Bison the first National Mammal of the United States. Bison were once kings of the Plains with as many as 30 million of these majesticbeasts roaming North America. But, as settlers increasingly migrated West, Bison were hunted to near extinction. At the turn of the 19th century, strict conservation efforts were put in place to savethem from oblivion. Today, Bison herds have made an incredible comeback and once again roam the Plains in protected parklands and private ranches throughout North America. The American Bison is a perfect symbol of the U.S. as it represents our nation's strength, history, and native culture.
The Silver-Plated Bison Coin Pays Tribute to This Magnificent Animal
Specially created to celebrate America's National Mammal, our official Bison - National Mammal commemorative coin is plated in .999 pure silver. Minted to the highest quality "Proof ” standard, it features a highly detailed image of an American Bison on the obverse that appears to leap off the coin's mirror-like finish. The reverse depicts an eagle — another animal that epitomizes American strength and resilience — perched atop the Liberty Bell.
