Abraham Lincoln Dollar Trial Coin
Known affectionately as "Honest Abe," Abraham Lincoln was a modest yet sagacious man who rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most revered figures in American history.
Born in a log cabin in Kentucky in 1809, Abraham Lincoln worked as a storekeeper, rail-splutter, postmaster, surveyor, and lawyer before becoming the sixteenth President of the United States.
His election in 1860 was quickly followed by the secession of several Southern states and the start of the Civil War.
On April 14, 1865, five days after the war ended, Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth and died the next day but his legacy of leadership is forever cemented in American history.
Largely self-educated, Lincoln was a voracious reader who applied the knowledge he gleaned from books to his everyday life and, ultimately, his career and political pursuits.
His diligence and love of learning helpedhim to become a prominent lawyer and eventually the leader of the United States during the most tumultuous period in its history.
The Origin of the Lincoln Dollar Coin
In 2005, Congress commissioned the U.S. Mint to create a series of coins honoring the United States Presidents, to be released in the order that they served. On November 18, 2010, the highly anticipated Abraham Lincoln Presidential Dollar was released to the public and sparked a frenzy among coin collectors all over the world. Although the Presidential Dollars were very popular among collectors, budgetary restraints meant the production of future Presidential Dollars would be limited. Beginning with Chester A. Arthur in the spring of 2012, only collectors willing to pay a premium above face value will be able to purchase the U.S. Mint's Presidential Dollars for their collection.
