Normal coinage resumed in 1817, once the Philadelphia Mint's rolling mills were rebuilt following a catastrophic fire in January of the previous year. This was yet another million+ mintage of half dollars that required eleven known obverse dies and ten reverses. These were combined in various marriages to produce the 13 Overton varieties sought by specialists. Two of these are overdates, and they are described in the entries that follow.
The only rare non-overdate marriages are O-104 and O-106a. The former is strictly for series specialists, but the late die state of O-106 is the popular "single-leaf" variety, O-106a. Overpolishing of the die to remove clash marks or erosion lines diminished the upper leaves, with just one remaining visible.
1817 half dollars of common varieties have survived in Mint State to the extent that they are collectable. Far more common, however, are almost-made-it pieces grading 58.
